Tour of the exhibition “Cézanne, Monet, Renoir. French Impressionism from the Langmatt Museum”
Understanding the intertwined nature of Impressionism
In autumn 2025, the Lower Belvedere presents a unique temporary exhibition: selections from the legendary Impressionist collection of the Villa Langmatt, one of the most important private collections of nineteenth-century French painting in Europe, will be shown in Vienna for the first time. During the excursion you will not only see unique works by the maestros of Impressionism – Claude Monet, Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, Camille Pissarro, Gustave Courbet and Eugène Boudin, but also understand how the artists sought to convey light and shadow, the mood of the moment and the movement of nature. Particular attention will be paid to what artistic, cultural and personal circumstances influenced the formation of each author’s visual language and Impressionism as a whole. You will also learn about the history of the collection itself – the collectors’ passion for French art and the fate of individual canvases that found themselves at the centre of public attention. In addition, we will draw parallels with the Viennese artistic tradition, emphasising the influence Impressionism had on Austrian masters, including representatives of the Vienna Secession.Overview
